Egret

step-stepping along the shore,

delicate dancer, precise,

pauses, poised in the green pool

where grey mullet gather –

then lunge, plunge, stab.

The surface surges – a single fish

silver-arcs the air, flicked tail

scattering diamonds, ripples

a ring of grace, twists

beyond the reach of rapier beak.

Instinct or intention,

if ever there was a time to leap

it was this –

opportune moment of fish.
